About us

Tharwa Sands was founded by the Hyles family in 1974. It is currently run by John Hyles, a second-generation owner/operator. The company is a leading producer of sand and gravel, which is sold at competitive prices throughout the Canberra, Goulburn and Southern Highlands regions. Tharwa Sands' product lines include: Ginninderra red granite, washed river sand, riverstone and topsoil.

The business operates from two Canberra locations:

• Ginninderra Red Granite Pit
• Westdale Sand Dredge

Tharwa Sands has a longstanding commitment to the Canberra region with strong ties to over 50 loyal customers. Customers include concrete companies, landscaping yards, builders and civil engineers, with products being used by most of the major institutions such as Parliament House, the National Library, National Museum of Australia, National Zoo and Aquarium, the Canberra Airport and many more.

Ginninderra red granite is a product exclusive to Tharwa Sands and it is seen throughout the public spaces of Canberra, providing a natural backdrop to much of the Bush Capital.

Our people

John Hyles

John Hyles has owned and operated Tharwa Sands for over 15 years. He learned by his father's side and built upon John senior's client base to make Tharwa Sands a leader in sand and gravel in the region.

Ingo Wilke

Ingo has run the Westdale Sand Dredge for over 20 years. There is no question he can't answer about sand. Ingo is at the Westdale Sand Dredge everyday, dredging up sand and serving our clients.

Max Reed

Max manages the Ginninderra Red Granite Pit. He has worked with Tharwa Sands for nearly 10 years.

Anna Hyles and Joanne Holberton

Anna and Joanne manage the office and handle the company's accounts.
