The Ginninderra Pit is unique in the fact that the open cut quarry is in the process of being completely reclaimed to its original natural profile due to the importation of VENM and clean fill from the Canberra region. Tharwa Sand uses the natural local grasses and trees to reclaim the site. Tharwa Sands has a strong commitment to the environment with all water testing carried out by Ecowise, a NATA accredited company (see annual EPA water test results).
The Tharwa Sands Washed Sand Dredge is located within the high water mark of the Burrinjuck Dam on the Murrumbidgee River. The sand is self-replenishing, for every metre dredged the dam can hold another 1000 litres of water. The Tharwa Sands dredge acts as a silt trap for the dam. The deep holes dredged provide an excellent fish habitat at times of low dam levels. NSW Fisheries Programs, Fisheries Research Manager, Crispin Ashby, stated after extensive examination of the dredge site, “Your dredging has created the best native fish habitat on the Murrumbidgee River”. Also see Professor Nanson, riverine expert, report on the Tharwa Sands dredge on the backwaters of the Burrinjuck Dam.
