Ginninderra Red Granite
Tharwa Sands Ginninderra Red Granite is very popular throughout the Sydney, Southern Highlands, Goulbourn and Canberra region. Whilst there is other similar looking red granite products the Ginninderra Porphyry Rock and its composition is unique.
The granite does not appear red when first quarried but after rain the oxidation process causes the vivid red colour to develop. The granite’s structure ensures excellent compaction with a CBR Value of 110 and a Plasticity Index of 10 % enabling it to form a permanent surface that resists erosion. Ginninderra Red Granite is weed free. Tharwa Sand has been producing gravel supplies of this decomposed Red Granite from this site for over 30 years. The crushed granite has been tested by Justin Smith of J & A Geotech Testing Pty Ltd., a certified NATA accredited laboratory. The deposit of granite at the Ginninderra pit does not vary in its composition and meets all specifications for wearing course as specified by the ARRB group pavement design and materials manual. Tharwa Sand is now producing gravel pebbles for garden granite and landscape granite this is an identical product to Hornsby Red Pea Gravel. Ginninderra Red Granite is used for nature strips, drive ways, roads, pathways, bicycle tracks, gardens and around trees. The Ginninderra Red Granite is environmental friendly as it produces a natural water free garden.
